CARGO WORTHY (CW) CONTAINERS

To identify as a cargo-worthy container, it has to meet some specifications and requirements.

ACRONYMS

CSC; “Convention for Safe Containers”

ISO; “International Organization For Standardization” in Geneva, Switzerland

CW; “Cargo Worthy” ISO Standard used by Rail & Marine shipping

CLASSIFICATION OF CONTAINERS;

New (1 trip); new container that made one trip loaded with cargo

IICL; lease container, of near new condition, with few cargo trips

CW; container that is deemed cargo-worthy 

WWT; container that is not cargo-worthy but is still wind and water-tight 

AS; damaged container, requiring repairs, and graded by cost required to bring back to cargo worthy condition

CRITERIA FOR CW CONTAINERS;

The criteria for CW containers are

 

  • Wind and watertight

  • The door gasket seal is sound

  • Meets the ISO standard for a safe CW container

  • Anomalies are within ISO parameters for a CW container

  • Interior and exterior may show wear & tear from cargo, including scratches, minor dents, surface rust, repairs and paint contamination

  • Floor may be stained, marked, worn, splintered, gouged, delaminated or repaired

  • Operational door hardware
